The vast majority of studies on nonverbal communication of emotion uses posed stimuli, but few direct comparisons have been made between perception of spontaneous and posed expressions. In this study, participants made judgments about spontaneous and posed expressions, judging the expressed emotion and whether the expression was spontaneous, and rating expressions on intensity (Experiments 1 and 2) and prototypicality (Experiment 2). The results showed that perceivers were able to accurately infer emotions from both posed and spontaneous expressions, from auditory, visual, and audiovisual cues.
