Did you know that also for example mice, rats, dogs and apes are laughing? Science journalist Maarten Keulemans takes the listeners and readers on a journey through the kosmos to see how different species laugh and how that behavior has developed through the evolution: bringing in a quicker rhythm, laughing while breathing out, and using more voice. For this, they interviewed various scientists, including Disa Sauter, an AICE member and professor of Experimental Psychology at the University of Oxford. She explains how tickling laughter has been the oldest form of laughter, and other developed later from that. With her team, they analyzed 900 laughter fragments.
This journalistic investigation was summarized in a podcast episode ““Giechelende muizen, schaterende apen: de evolutie van lachen” [Giggling mice, roaring monkeys: the evolution of laughter] and a newspaper article “Wat is toch die oerkracht waardoor zelfs de stoerste volwassenen soms niet meer bijkomen van het lachen?” [What is this primal force that sometimes makes even the toughest adults laugh so hard they can't catch their breath?].
